Sacramental Wisdom: Humilitatio, Eruditio, Exercitatio in the Scholastics and Today.O. P. Sr Albert Marie Surmanski - 2023 - Nova et Vetera 21 (4):1391-1413.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Sacramental Wisdom:Humilitatio, Eruditio, Exercitatio in the Scholastics and TodaySr. Albert Marie Surmanski O.P.IntroductionThe relationship between human nature and the sacraments is often characterized in a way that takes away from the beauty and power of the sacraments. Sacraments are sometimes viewed today as something basically irrelevant to human life, an interesting spiritual "option" for those who find comfort in ritual. This view leads to a sacramental practice that is (...)

  3. The Strange Death of Patroklos.Marie-Christine Leclerc & Jennifer Curtiss Gage - 1998 - Diogenes 46 (181):95-100.
The account of the death of Patroklos occupies a strategic position in the narrative economy of the Iliad: before this event, Achilles has withdrawn from combat out of indignation against Agamemnon; afterwards, his anger turns against Hector, whom he holds responsible for his friend's death. Achilles returns to battle and kills Hector in an act of vengeance that, as we have known from the beginning of the poem, will lead to his own demise, which is not actually recounted in the (...)

Downside Abbey Lastyear I was visited by an old friend from my Liverpool days. Resurrection and Sacraments in the Systematic Theology of Albert the Great.O. P. Sr Albert Marie Surmanski - 2021 - Franciscan Studies 79 (1):57-80.
Current theological thought across various fields emphasizes the synthetic and holistic nature of Christ’s saving work. For example, consider the use of the term “Paschal Mystery” by the second Vatican Council1 and the language of “the Christ event” in Biblical studies.2 Even Heideggarian theologians who use the language of “symbolic recognition” see the sacraments as moments when Christians recognize and affirm their connectedness to the whole mystery of Christ.3 Conversely, ulta-traditionalist authors combat the idea of Paschal mystery, charging that the (...)

For medical schools, the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated examination and curricular restructuring as well as significant changes to clinical attachments. With the available evidence suggesting that medical students’ mental health status is already poorer than that of the general population, with academic stress being a chief predictor, such changes are likely to have a significant effect on these students. This online, cross-sectional study aimed to determine the impact of COVID-19 on perceived stress levels of medical students, investigate possible contributing and alleviating (...)

We argue that relating to myself as me provides, as such, a reason to care about myself: grasping that an event involves me, instead of another, makes it matter in a special way. Further, this self-concern is not simply a matter of seeing in myself some instrumental value for other ends. We use as our foil a recent skeptical challenge to this view offered in Setiya (2015). Targeting the Spleen as an Alternative Site for Hematopoiesis.Christie Short, Hong K. Lim, Jonathan Tan & Helen C. O'Neill - 2019 - Bioessays 41 (5):1800234.
Bone marrow is the main site for hematopoiesis in adults. It acts as a niche for hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and contains non‐hematopoietic cells that contribute to stem cell dormancy, quiescence, self‐renewal, and differentiation. HSC also exist in resting spleen of several species, although their contribution to hematopoiesis under steady‐state conditions is unknown. The spleen can however undergo extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) triggered by physiological stress or disease. With the loss of bone marrow niches in aging and disease, the spleen as (...)

    Huts and Farm Buildings in Homer.Mary O. Knox - 1971 - Classical Quarterly 21 (01):27-.
These seem to be regarded as quite a different type of building from houses. The terminology used of them is to a large extent distinct. The only case of extensive overlapping has probably a special stylistic reason. The main words involved are κλισίη , αύλή , μσσαυλος , and σταθμός/–οί . The evidence is scanty: in the Iliad there are a number of passages relating to soldiers' huts, and a few mentions of farms in similes and in the Shield section. (...)

‘House’ and ‘Palace’ in Homer.Mary O. Knox - 1970 - Journal of Hellenic Studies 90:117-120.
The interesting thing about the word for ‘palace’ in Homer is that there is no such word. All the words that mean ‘house’ may be applied to a royal palace, but all of them may equally well be used of the house of an ordinary citizen, μέγαρον is often translated ‘palace’, or some other word with connotations of kingly majesty. But it too, when it is not more narrowly localised to the living-room, means just a house in general.Just as there (...)

    Megarons and ΜΕΓΑΡΑ: Homer and Archaeology.Mary O. Knox - 1973 - Classical Quarterly 23 (01):1-.
This paper is primarily an attempt to study the Homeric evidence on houses, particularly on the , in relation to the relevant remains. The reverse procedure, illuminating the archaeological evidence by references to Homer, is a hazardous one, as we shall see. It is often unclear just what is represented by the descriptions in the poems, and what period, if any, the things described belong to. I shall be concerned with these questions here. Are the houses in the poems Mycenaean: (...)

Predatory Priests, Silenced Victims: The Sexual Abuse Crisis and the Catholic Church.Mary Gail Frawley-O'Dea & Virginia Goldner (eds.) - 2007 - Routledge.
The sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church captured headlines and mobilized public outrage in January 2002. But much of the commentary that immediately followed was reductionistic, focusing on single "causes" of clerical abuse such as mandatory celibacy, homosexuality, sexual repressiveness or sexual permissiveness, anti-Catholicism, and a decadent secular culture. _Predatory Priests, Silenced Victims: The Sexual Abuse Crisis and the Catholic Church_, a collection of groundbreaking articles edited by Mary Gail Frawley-O'Dea and Virginia Goldner, eschews such one-size-fits-all theorizing. In its (...)

Bounded PAC substructures of models of stable theory T are generalizations of bounded PAC fields and bounded PAC beautiful pairs generalize Poizat's beautiful pairs. Both notions were introduced in the authors Ph.D. thesis. In this paper, we prove that under the assumption that the PAC property is first order for T, the theory of any bounded PAC structure is simple. Moreover, if the PAC property is first order for T and T does not have the finite cover property, then the (...)

What does it mean to ‘drop out’ of therapy? Many definitions of ‘dropout’ have been proposed, but the most widely accepted is the client ending treatment without agreement of their therapist. However, this is in some ways an external criterion that does not take into account the client’s experience of therapy, or reasons for ending it prematurely. This study aimed to identify whether there were more meaningful categories of dropout than the existing dropout definition, and to test whether this refined (...)

Counselling about HIV serological status disclosure: nursing practice or law enforcement? a Foucauldian reflection.Patrick O'Byrne, Dave Holmes & Marie Roy - 2015 - Nursing Inquiry 22 (2):134-146.
Recently, focus groups and qualitative interviews with nurses who provide frontline care for persons living with HIV highlighted the contentiousness surrounding the seemingly innocuous activity of counselling clients about HIV‐status disclosure, hereafter disclosure counselling. These empirical studies highlighted that while some nurses felt they should instruct clients to disclose their HIV‐positive status if HIV transmission were possible, other nurses were equally adamant that such counselling was outside the nursing scope of practice. A review of these opposing perceptions about disclosure counselling, (...)
